by Pamela Ackerman

The story of one hundred years of culture at the site of The Acadia Cinema Coop’s Al Whittle Theatre in Wolfville will be on display during the month of September at Jack’s Gallery in the theatre lobby, 450 Main Street.

Starting September 1st, the Gallery walls will be home to an extensive collection of memorabilia — posters, programs, photos, articles, etc.,– depicting the history of many performances and events that took place in the various venues that have been on the site since 1911.

The 100th Anniversary Committee of the Cooperative is sponsoring the display, and is indebted to Steven Slipp, Board member and graphic designer, who has put all the pieces together into a coherent whole. Much of the material has been loaned by Ken Bezanson of Port Williams, and Al Whittle, or found in archival research by Susan Hauer and Bill Zimmerman. Thanks go to Heather Watts, Anne and David Burton and the Wolfville Historical Society and the staffs of Acadia University’s Archives and the Nova Scotia Archives.

The Acadia Cinema Cooperative is a unique non-profit arts cooperative that operates the Al Whittle Theatre and Studio-Z . Formed in 2002, the coop now has more than 680 shareholders, who have each made an investment in our Valley’s vibrant cultural life. New shareholders are always welcome. For more information about the Acadia Cinema Cooperative or how to become a shareholder, check out the website at www.acadiacinema.coop or contact Corporate secretary, Fred Chipman at (902)542-2141 (home).

Watch future 100th Anniversary events in the media, on posters, in the theatre’s calendar window, web sites and listed here:

With the news of two anonymous $50,000 share purchases and a new Equity Tax Credit registration (July 1, 2011 to February 28, 2012) friends and fans of the Acadia Cinema Coop have great hope that the Coop’s mortgage can be retired once and for all!

Shares purchased during this period will go toward the Coop’s “Sink the Mortgage” plan. This is the third and final year of this three-year plan, which has encouraged new and old shareholders alike to purchase at least one share for three years running to help sink the mortgage. The Equity Tax Credit – that’s 35% of the cost of every share right off the top of your Provincial income taxes for this year – offers an added incentive to help the ACC reach its goal by the end of 2011, during the Coop’s centennial celebrations of the theatre site.

When the Cooperative initiated “the “sink” plan in November 2008, ACC owed $227,000. As of July 1, 2011, the balance on the mortgage was $132,000! This reduction reflects an extraordinary commitment to our Coop from the community. Now with the two amazing $50,000 share purchases, the Coop has $32,000 left.

So, can we “Sink” the Coop’s mortgage during the 100th celebration year? Let’s do it!

Any questions? Contact Fred Chipman.

In a Pay-What-You-Can to help “Sink the ACC Mortgage admission, audiences were absolutely delighted with gifted local musician Krissy Keech’s appropriate live keyboard accompaniment for the award-winning silent film classic The General, starring Buster Keaton (1926).

A native of Grand-Pré, Krissy holds degrees in piano performance from Acadia University (BM) and McGill University (MMus). She is working on her PhD from McGill in Music Education and also teaches piano in her Halifax home-studio. As an accompanist she has worked with the Canadian Chamber Choir at Suase, the Nova Scotia Youth Chamber Choir, the Acadia Youth Choir and the Annapolis Valley Honour Choir. A self-taught jazzer, Keech believes in the importance of musical development through improvisation and composition, but “playing for a silent film was a whole new experience,” she said. Krissy awed the audience with her non-stop accompaniment of well-chosen and original music for the full hour and twenty minutes. In a brief Q & A after her performance Krissy said she was thrilled to have been asked to participate and found the preparation and the performance both challenging and very rewarding.

With the theatre site’s Centenary Celebration the Acadia Cinema Coop is pleased that certain events, as well Centennial Souvenir Sales, will directly support the three-year plan to ”Sink The Mortgage” by the end of 2011.
