Technical Advisory Committee established

The Coop is lucky to have the involvement of many members of the community – some are theatre professionals and many others are keen and capable volunteers, supporting the theatre in ways they can. There is now a technical advisory committee set up to advise the Coop board and theatre manager on how best to keep our facility state-of-the-art and responsive to our presenters. Plans are underway for an equipment inventory, and an audit of all aspects of the technical infrastructure and the structure as a whole. Let us know if you would like to help out and be a volunteer to keep our building in top shape!

100th Anniversary exhibit on show

The story of one hundred years of culture at the site of the Acadia Cinema Coop’s Al Whittle Theatre will once again be on display during February in the theatre lobby, 450 Main Street in Wolfville.

The walls of Jack’s Gallery will feature an extensive collection of memorabilia — posters, programs, photos, articles, etc.,– depicting the history of many performances and events that took place in the various venues that have been on the site since 1911.

The 100th Anniversary Committee of the Cooperative is sponsoring the display. Wonderful archival material has been loaned by Ken Bezanson of Port Williams, and Al Whittle, or found in archival research by Susan Hauer and Bill Zimmerman. Thanks go to Heather Watts, Anne and David Burton and the Wolfville Historical Society and the staffs of Acadia University’s Archives and the Nova Scotia Archives.

New Theatre Manager hired

The Acadia Cinema Coop is pleased to welcome Mary Harwell as the new theatre manager for the Al Whittle Theatre, effective February 6. Mary has an impressive background in stage management and runs her own small business, Tempest Restaurant, with husband, Chef Michael Howell. She is plugged into the Wolfville community and we are excited to have her part-time. Now there’s even more to celebrate in this, our 100th anniversary year as a cultural venue in Wolfville.

If you have not yet had a chance to experience 100 years of Stage & Screen currently hanging in Jack’s Gallery (the Al Whittle Theatre lobby), you’d better hurry. The exhibit which explores a century of history of the new Acadia Cinema’s Al Whittle Theatre site as a community cultural venue will come down on November 3, after the Acadia Cinema Cooperative’s AGM. Mortgage-free future $100,000 closer for Acadia Cinema Coop

The story of one hundred years of culture at the site of The Acadia Cinema Coop’s Al Whittle Theatre in Wolfville will be on display during the month of September at Jack’s Gallery in the theatre lobby, 450 Main Street.

Starting September 1st, the Gallery walls will be home to an extensive collection of memorabilia — posters, programs, photos, articles, etc.,– depicting the history of many performances and events that took place in the various venues that have been on the site since 1911.

The 100th Anniversary Committee of the Cooperative is sponsoring the display, and is indebted to Steven Slipp, Board member and graphic designer, who has put all the pieces together into a coherent whole. Much of the material has been loaned by Ken Bezanson of Port Williams, and Al Whittle, or found in archival research by Susan Hauer and Bill Zimmerman. Thanks go to Heather Watts, Anne and David Burton and the Wolfville Historical Society and the staffs of Acadia University’s Archives and the Nova Scotia Archives.
